Two years after first reading it, I can finally articulate some thoughts. ![]() ![]() The Power Broker Is More Than A Biography Not everyone needs to read The Power Broker, but those that can understand it should. It's a book that is worth reading, re-reading, and some more re-reading. Robert Caro's book belongs to a shelf with Romance of the Three Kingdoms, The Dream of The Red Chambers, To Kill A Mockingbird, and Shakespeare's First Folio. ![]() There may be only a handful of these triple-crowns, the reason behind deserves an essay on its own. But to satisfy all three is the holy crown. Some even satisfy two, which are already worthwhile. In fact, I came up with these questions after finishing it.Įach question addresses a unique part of the reading experience - entertainment, practical value, and intimacy, which is hard to measure but you know when it's there. Is it enjoyable? Is it repeatedly insightful? Does it move me in a personal way unrelated to the entertainment or learning aspect? The Power Broker easily answers these questions. Sometimes I summarized the gist of an idea, sometimes I simply cited important or well-written paragraphs that capture the gist well by themselves. ![]() Instead, I provide here the shortest summary I can come up with in three minutes and then leave the reader with a chronological collection of notes I made while reading. I decided therefore to write neither a review nor a complete summary. In fact, I only got a feeling of the big picture of Graebers line of thought by compiling this post. It is so full of anthropological evidence as well as Graebers own interpretation of circumstances that it is not easy to keep all of them in mind, much less to make out the big picture that Graeber wants to paint.
